Day 25 – Puffing Billy & Penguins
Today we traveled to the other side of Melbourne. It is kinda funny here everything is considered Melbourne up to even two hours away. Puffing Billy is located outside downtown Melbourne in the Yarra Mountain Range. We got on the train, Puffing Billy, in a little country town called Belgrave. Puffing Billy is a steam train that was used in the late 1800’s. It was fun riding the train thru the mountains.
We had a great time riding the old steam train and seeing it on the trestle bridge.
Since we were on the other side of Melbourne already we decided to head from Puffing Billy down to Philip Island. Everyone we had talked to had asked the kids if we had visited yet.
We found a nice three bedroom cottage on the island, dropped our stuff so we could make it to the penguins. The penguins parade is where the little penguins return home just after sunset bringing food back to their babies that are nested in the banks.
The area is very commercialized with board walks and staged seating for viewing the penguins arrival on the beach. All is there and the other roads close at sunset to ensure the safety and rehabilitation of the penguins and their natural habitat. The penguins have very sensitive eyes so photography is not permitted…you will have to come see them for yourself. They were very fun to watch!!
